When Do You Need To Add Your Partner To Your Car Insurance Policy?

by Sue Palmer

There are so many things that you have to think about when you are dating someone, some of which are things that you might not have thought about before. For example, it might have never crossed your mind to add your spouse to your car insurance policy, but this might be something that you will need to do. These are a few signs that you might need to add your partner to your policy.

If They Ever Drive Your Vehicle

You and your partner might not live with one another, but your partner still might drive your vehicle from time to time. You might not mind sharing your vehicle with your partner when you don't need it, for example, or they might drive it occasionally to help you out with things, such as by dropping off your vehicle at the repair shop. If this is the case, you should make sure that your partner is added to your insurance policy. After all, if they aren't, you could face problems later if they are involved in an accident or if something else happens while they are driving your car.

If You Are Moving In With One Another

You and your partner might be ready to take things to the next level, so you could be thinking about moving in with one another. If this is the case, be aware that many car insurance companies do require you to add any adult of driving age or older to your insurance policy if they live in the same household, even if the two of you are not getting married.

If You're Getting Married

If you and your partner are going to be getting married soon, you might be expecting a lot of major changes in both of your lives. There might be one change that you have not thought about yet, though: adding your soon-to-be spouse to your car insurance policy. However, this is something that your insurance company will probably require you to do. You might find that it's advantageous for you to do so, however; then, you and your spouse will no longer have to worry about having two separate insurance policies, since you can purchase just one policy as a couple that lists both of you and all of your vehicles. You might also get a discount or reduction in your premiums once you get married, so this can be a positive part of talking to your insurance agent about your upcoming wedding, too.
